A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
